Engaging the Social Networking Generation

Noel Levitz completed three research projects related to E-Expectations of college bound students. The study is an overview of the changing face of recruitment, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Potential students are very open to multiple forms of communication from colleges, including blogs, podcasts, online chats, instant messaging and cell phones.
One example is that approximately 63% of the respondents said they would read a blog authored by a faculty member in order to obtain more information about a college.

Ohio University Without Boundaries Second Life Campus

The Ohio University Without Boundaries Second Life Campus is officially open to the public. For those not familiar with Second Life, it is a 3D virtual world that allows users to explore, build, collaborate, learn and participate in a host of other activities within a virtual society. Ohio University Without Boundaries is specifically interested in the possibilities for technology mediated learning that are presented in Second Life. The following are some screen shots of the virtual campus infrastructure:

One of the most exciting elements of the OUWB virtual campus is the work and research that is going on in the campus "Learning Center." The "Learning Center" provides the space to house multiple "learning kiosks." The "learning kiosk" provides a scalable method for building modularized learning with a variety of support resources and media. Each kiosk will hold unique learning content for blended or stand-alone learning experiences. A prototype learning experience is currently available in the learning center as part of the blend for students in John Stinson's "Managing in the Innovation Age" course. The kiosk is also open to non-students who are interested.

This prototype kiosk features a real-world challenge, a common feature in OUWB's action learning approach. There is also a video podcast player that subscribes to a podcast that is also available through the iTunes store and the class blog. The kiosk also offers links to best practice and links to the class blog. The podcast and links will all aid students in working through and responding to the challenge. Here is a screenshot of the "Managing in the Innovation Age" learning kiosk:
